When thinking about
purchasing a property in Portugal it is important to ensure you
obtain the services of an independent, registered advogada
(lawyer). It is common practice for most of us to instruct a lawyer to oversee the entire procedure
and you should view the purchase of a property in Portugal no
differently.
In Portugal, though
the purchasing procedure may be slightly different, the services a
solicitor (advogada) offers are no different. You may see or
be recommended to a 'solicitador', but be careful. The name is
confusingly similar to the English 'solicitor', however they are
vastly different. A solicitador usually undertakes conveyance work
and they do not have to take a degree.
When choosing your
advogada ensure they are independent, licensed and registered with
the
Ordem de Advogadas (the governing
body of solicitors in Portugal). It is also advisable the solicitor
you choose speaks English. This will aid in the purchase of your
property. Normally a solicitor will draft out all the legal
contracts will be in English and Portuguese to ensure you understand
what you are signing. |
