The
Autódromo do Estoril (Autódromo do Fernandes Pires da
Silva) was opened in 1972 and is situated nine
kilometres north of the central Portugal town which
gives it it's name.
Estoril
Circuit, as it's also sometimes known, was originally
4.35 kilometres long and changes to the track for driver
safety have seen it's length alter from time to time.
The current circuit measures 4.128 kilometres.

|
Estoril Circuit hosted
the Portuguese round of the FIA Formula 1 Grand Prix a total of 12 times
from 1984 through until 1996. Crowds packed the circuit's grandstands
and embankments to watch drivers including Nikki Lauda, Damon Hill,
Michael Schumacher and of course the legendary Brazilian driver Ayrton
Senna, who picked up his first ever F1 win in 1985, during these years.
In recent years Estoril
has kept Portuguese motorbike fans contented hosting the World Superbike
Championships as well as track and test days. |
