Portugal, by European standards, is relatively crime-free, though there's the usual petty theft in cities and larger tourist resorts.

It is always advisable to be vigilant however as there is no guarantee about personal safety or the safety of your possessions.

There are two main police forces in Portugal - the metropolitan Policia de Seguranca Publica (PSP) and Guarda National Republicana (GNR).
