How to Get Connected to Mains Electricity in Portugal

A domestic electricity supply in Portugal is in general very reliable, however more rural, remote areas will be prone to power cuts during the winter months. Portugal at present is not self sufficient in it's electricity generation, however with the construction of new sustainable energy plants in the forms of solar farms, hydro-electric plants and wave farms, they are well on their way to harnessing renewable energies in line with the Kyoto Protocol.

Various levels of power are available depending upon the amount of usable you will expect to use at your property, something you can discuss and be advised upon with the electricity supply company - EDP (Energias de Portugal). Even after you have chosen the level of supply you make with EDP and a contract made, you can change this level at any time. Triphase electricity is also available in Portugal.
