Serra da Estrela Dogs
are a breed native to Portugal and were bred to guard
and herd sheep in the mountains of the same name.
The
dogs, which can grow up to to 70 centimetres in height,
can either be long or short haired. Estrela dogs are
intelligent, alert, loyal and athletic and can make
faithful companions, though they will need to be
exercised, a lot.
The
exact origin of the breed is unknown, but it is |
|
believed
they were brought to
Portugal either
by the Romans or later by the Visigoths. Estrela's are a
working dog and due to their characteristics and size
were and still are ideal for herding and guarding flocks
of sheep.
High in
the Serra da Estrela mountains in central Portugal the
dogs are a common sight with most residents owning one
or two. It is also quite common to find Serra da Estrela
puppies for sale in the towns of Seia and Torre, though
it is unlikely you will be able to get a pedigree
certificate if purchasing this way. |
