Tramagal in Central Portugal

The town of Tramagal lies on the south banks of the River Tagus (Rio Tejo) just ten kilometres from Abrantes in the Ribatejo region.  Legend has it the town, which is a maze of narrow streets lined with traditional style cottages and elegant town houses, was named after a medicinal bush.

Tramagal was elevated to the status of town in 1986, however with only 4,000 inhabitants it retains its feel of a village. There is market held weekly selling fresh fruit, vegetables, clothes and ironmongery in the town centre.

The surrounding countryside is relatively flat compared to towns to the north of the Tagus. However the lush, fertile soils are conducive for the production of wine. The award winning vineyard, Quinta Casal da Coelheira, where you can fill your own bottles or book a wine tasting evening,  is located within Tramagal.

Tramagal has easy access to the A23 motorway, which runs east to west across Portugal, and is only 138 kilometres from the capital, Lisbon.
