Central Portugal
residents, John and
Sue Trueman, pictured opposite and below, have had a
love affair with walking since they began married life
over 30 years ago.
Their
romance with walking began at the same time as their
marriage, or rather their honeymoon, which they took in
the Lake District in England.
Ever
since, the now retired couple, have had the walking bug.
They hiked extensively in the United Kingdom, usually at
the weekends or when busy work lives allowed. They
returned many times to the Lake District as well as to
the Cotswolds, New Forest, West Somerset, Quantock
Hills, Peak District and the Marlborough Downs.
Holidays usually incorporated walks
in which ever continent they found themselves. Two of
the highlights of their walking careers were hiking in
both the Appalachian and the Rockies
mountains in the United States of America.

In 2003
though they moved to the Granada region of Spain where
they spent their leisure time walking in the the
spectacular Lecrin Valley, where they lived, the Sierra
Nevada mountains, as well as taking holidays hiking in
the Grazelema and Donana Natural Parks.

In 2008 they uprooted again,
travelling further west to
central Portugal, where they
have continued to walk, both around their home territory
of Tomar as well as areas of the
Silver Coast, Monchique
Mountains of the
Algarve and more recently central
Algarve.
These avid walkers, who prefer
nothing better than pulling on their hiking boots,
packing a rucksack with provisions and setting out to
discover new horizons, have documented their walks in
Portugal, which will be featured on
gekkoportugal.com on
a monthly basis.
The Truemans' hope their treks will
inspire you to get out and about, follow them into the
countryside and enjoy the delights of
walking in Portugal.
Each walk is accompanied with a well-crafted map
(courtesy or amateur artist John) and photographs of the
route.
There will be downloadable PDF
versions of each of the walks, which can be emailed to
interested parties. The Truemans' and
gekkoportugal.com hope you will enjoy
this series of walks.
